Skin is the first thing we notice in people. It radiates a sunny glow in its prime health.  It is also the largest organ of our body which protects, feels sensation, and also respires. Dermatology looks into skin, hair, and nails –All the visible, parts of you that define your beauty.

Is there anything common about the skin, hair, and nails?

Your skin, hair, and nails may look different but they are made of the same base material –Keratin.

Keratin or Keratinocytes are proteins found in your skin, hair, and nails.

  • In the skin, it helps in forming a protective outer layer that maintains its rigidity.
  • In Hair, it helps in protecting the hair shaft.
  • In Nails, it helps in making them strong and shiny.

What is my skin made of?

Your skin is made up of 3 layers

  • Epidermis – The upper layer of the skin that gets replaced every 28 days. It is the upper, protective layer of the skin.
  • Dermis  -The layer under Epidermis is Dermis. It contains blood vessels, hair follicles, nerve endings, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands.
  • Subcutaneous tissue –This is the last layer of the skin and contains blood vessels, connective tissues, and cells that store fat. These help you to cushion a blow and hold in heat in your body.

What is my hair made of?

Hair protects your skin and also helps in retaining heat in the body. Every hair follicle contain:

  • Hair shaft –The part that shoots up and is visible on our body
  • Root –The bulb at the end of the hair shaft that is rooting in your skin
  • Follicle –The pit in the skin where the hair grows. The actual hair growth happens under the follicle called Papilla. It nourishes the hair and shoots it up from the skin.

To understand the process better, the hair is nourished by Papilla. The tissues connect together and form into a rod. The rod shoots up and is cut off from nourishment. It starts to form a protein called Keratin. The hair cells die in the process and together with Keratin, it forms the shaft of the hair. This process is called keratinization.

What is my nail made of?

Your nail grows in the deep folds of your fingers and toes. Just like our hair, the nails go through the process of keratinization and push out. Below the nail, there is a layer of skin called a matrix. The nail plate looks pink because of the blood vessels under it. Lunula is the crescent-shaped area at the bottom of the nail.

Fun fact: Nails and hair grow fastest during summer than in winter.
